How to turn a work of art into investment – just ask Dubai.

For the well-heeled in Dubai, being among the first in the world to lay their hands on a new premium smartphone or another gadget is not enough. We want it now, and we want it in gold.

Latest in the lines of gadgets that have been treated ‘royally’ to feed our gold addiction are the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy s6 edge smartphones that are due to be launched on Thursday in Dubai, and worldwide.

Select axiom stores in the UAE says it will be the first worldwide to bring the gold-plated devices to market, with the elegant handsets becoming available on the same day as the official debut of Samsung’s new releases on  Friday  April 10.

In 24 carat gold, the special editions of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be priced at Dh5,499 ($1,497) and Dh5,999 ($1,633) respectively, axiom said in a statement on Thursday.

“At axiom, we are committed to constantly meeting and exceeding customer expectations. The market in the UAE is discerning and has a true appreciation for the finer things. After receiving increasing customer inquiries for luxury editions of the new Samsung models, we are happy to be the first to introduce these powerful devices enwrapped in 24 carat gold,” said Faisal Al Bannai, CEO, axiom.

“Combined with Samsung’s thin and lightweight design, these fashionable devices will truly feel like a treasure in the hands of their owners.”

It isn’t, of course, the first time a gadget has been treated in gold for those with an urge to splurge. Apple’s devices, including iPhones and iPads, have been regularly getting done up in platinum, black gold, rose gold and much more for audience here in Dubai and elsewhere.
