Weerawansa ties up Sirisena with pharmaceutical mafia
Medicine prices had reached unprecedented highs during former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena’s time as the latter had secret deals with the pharmaceutical mafia, Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa alleged.

Addressing a propaganda rally in Matale last week in support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the minister said common opposition presidential candidate Sirisena’s son Daham was engaged to a daughter of a pharmaceutical businessman and large sums in foreign currencies had recently been found by the CID and Central Bank officials from a house belonging to the brother of the businessman at Ratmalana. "The foreign currency is worth more than Rs. 160 million. The CID had been tipped off by a youth from the same house. The CID and Central Bank officials found the stash of cash and produced the find before Mt. Lavinia Court. There were Swiss Francs and US Dollars.

The youth told the court that foreign cash had been brought to that home by Daham Sirisena and a portion of that cash had been taken away by Daham’s girlfriend. Daham, his girlfriend and her businessman father are now evading the police. That businessman is one of the members of the pharmaceutical mafia which had connections with Maithripala Sirisena," Minister Weerawansa alleged.

"So, how on earth can we expect medicine prices to go down or remain low when the country’s former health minister was working hand in glove with the pharmaceutical mafia?" Weerawansa queried. Minister Weerawansa said that Maithripala Sirisena’s daughter, her husband and one of her friends have booked air-tickets to flee the country to Canada on January 09, 2015. "We will not shut down airports after election victory as some of the candidates have vowed. We will let them leave, but those who have charges and are wanted by the police will not be able to do so," he said.
